Iceland sells volcanoes hard, and not every volcano stop earns its place in a short itinerary. Here is what the craters, steam fields, power plants and eruption museums are really like, and which ones to skip.

Is the Kerið crater worth stopping for?
Kerið is a volcanic crater in the Grímsnes area, about an hour from Reykjavik on the Golden Circle route, with steep red and black scoria walls dropping to a milky teal lake at the bottom. A path circles the rim in fifteen minutes and a stairway descends to the water. The landowners charge a small entry fee.

The colour is what makes it. Most Icelandic craters are grey or brown, and Kerið is oxidised iron red, which against the green summer moss and the pale blue-green water reads almost artificial. In winter the lake ices over and the whole bowl turns white and rust.
Honestly assessed, it is a twenty to thirty minute stop, not an afternoon. Is the Lava Centre worth a stop on the way east?
The Lava Centre at Hvolsvöllur is an interactive volcano and earthquake exhibition sitting directly on Route 1, about ninety minutes from Reykjavik and right on the way to the South Coast waterfalls. It runs year round, takes about an hour, and is the best bad-weather option on that road.

The exhibition is built around the mechanics rather than the spectacle: how magma moves, why the Icelandic hotspot behaves as it does, what the seismic record looked like before specific eruptions. There is a corridor of screens showing eruption footage at scale, a section that shakes to reproduce earthquake intensity, and a live seismograph feed.
Who should stop: anyone travelling with curious children, anyone visiting between November and February when there are perhaps five hours of daylight and an indoor hour costs you nothing, and anyone who wants the geology explained before looking at it. Can you visit a geothermal power plant in Iceland?
Yes, and two plants run proper visitor exhibitions. Hellisheiði, roughly half an hour east of Reykjavik, is one of the largest geothermal power stations in the world and has a walk-through exhibition inside the working plant. Krafla, near Lake Mývatn in the north, has a smaller visitor centre beside its turbine hall.

Hellisheiði is the more substantial visit. You look down into the machine hall from a glass walkway, follow the process from borehole to turbine to the pipeline heading for the city, and see the carbon capture operation on the same site, where CO2 is dissolved in water and injected into basalt to mineralise underground. Whatever you think about energy politics, watching a country run its heating off a hillside is a different experience from reading about it.
Krafla is more industrial and less curated, but the setting does the work. The plant sits in the middle of the Krafla caldera, a few minutes from Víti, an explosion crater holding an opaque green lake, and beside the lava field left by the Krafla Fires, the eruption sequence that ran through the late 1970s and early 1980s. Which geothermal fields can you actually walk through?
Four fields are set up for walking: Geysir in the Haukadalur valley, Hverir at Námaskarð near Mývatn, Seltún at Krýsuvík on Reykjanes, and Reykjadalur above Hveragerði. Each has marked paths over ground that is genuinely dangerous to leave, and all four are free to enter.

Geysir is the famous one and the busiest. The Great Geysir that gave every geyser in the world its name has been largely dormant for decades, but Strokkur beside it fires a column of water fifteen to twenty metres up every five to ten minutes, reliably enough that you will see it three times while deciding where to stand. Reykjadalur is the one you earn. From the car park above Hveragerði, a path climbs roughly three kilometres up a valley, forty-five to sixty minutes at a steady pace, past steaming vents to a river that runs hot. A boardwalk with changing screens lines the bathable stretch, and you sit in the current and move upstream or down to find the temperature you want. Go in daylight, take a towel, and expect the path to be muddy.

Can you go inside a volcano in Iceland?
There is exactly one place in the world where you can be lowered into the magma chamber of a dormant volcano, and it is Þríhnúkagígur, about half an hour from Reykjavik. An open lift drops visitors roughly 120 metres into a chamber that drained rather than collapsed after its last eruption. It runs summer only and it is the most expensive single activity in Icelandic tourism.
Getting there involves a walk of around forty-five minutes each way across a lava field from the meeting point, so it is not a drive-up attraction. The season typically runs from around May into October, weather permitting, and group sizes are small because the lift is small.

The cheaper cousin is a lava tube. Where can you see the aftermath of Iceland's famous eruptions?
Four eruptions left visitable ground: Eyjafjallajökull in 2010 with its ash-fall farm exhibition, Heimaey in 1973 where a suburb lies under lava and a museum is built around an excavated house, the Krafla Fires of 1975 to 1984 in the north, and Laki in 1783, whose crater row is reachable by highland track in summer.
Heimaey is the most affecting and the least visited by short-trip travellers. Where does geothermal water turn into a bath rather than a sight?
Iceland's geothermal bathing splits into three tiers: the big designed lagoons with towels and a bar, the modest local swimming pools that every town runs, and the wild pools you walk to. All three are heated by the same ground, and the price gap between them is enormous.
